Star analysis-Michael Buble

Michael Buble is Canadian singer who came into the limelight in 2005 with his album it’s time. Since then he has went on to release multiple albums and receive multiple music awards. His similarities in both music style and fashion to Frank Sinatra are mentioned regularly in the media some have even quoting him as being “the modern day Sinatra”.

Fashion/visual look
It is clear much of his image is based on Frank Sinatra Michael is nearly always shown in suits which are most of the time black this emphasizes the persona of a somewhat smooth and slick singer (once again like Sinatra). The suits also add class to his depiction in the media, this feeling of class around him is imperative to attracting his desired target audience.

The suits also give him suave feel and more recently he is being seen more as a ladies’ man and a sex symbol to women of a certain age.
Genre
Michael’s genre could fall into different categories traditional pop, big band and jazz are three of them. It is because of this diversity in his music that he is able to appeal to many different groups. His image has stayed very much the same always shown as upbeat and classy. Usually his music videos are very simple and mostly have him by a microphone singing (once again like Frank). Although his more recent videos like “Just haven’t met you yet” go against this.

Media representation
Michael is portrayed as a very wholesome and classy sing by the different forms of media.

On this Canadians woman’s magazine his wholesome representation remains despite the magazine exploiting the fact that he has become a female sex symbol “Single, reborn and totally unbuttoned”

It seems as Michaels career has progressed, his image very slowly progressing away from just simply a singer with a powerful voice. The cause for this may be Michaels appearance changing because during the start of his career he was a little chubby but because of this change his agent/manager are more trying to exploit he’s new overall look it may also be why he pictured wearing black less often.

Motif
A massive part of Michael Buble’s image (as I have already mentioned quite a few times) is his similarities to frank Sinatra. This is very much intentional the covers of much of Sinatra’s work mean that Michael and his agent etc. know that his similarities to Sinatra are a selling point for them.

Symbolism
Michael doesn’t use a lot of symbolism such as religion in his in his videos this keeps him very neutral and allows to appeal to a more mainstream audience.

Performance
His Performance and videos are very much just concentrated on him and his band singing a playing and very little is about dance moves and imagery although “haven’t met you yet” does have a more narrative video then some of his other songs but still there isn’t much  dancing and choreography  involved in his performances.

This also helps keep his image separate from others such as Katie Perry who puts a lot of enthuses into performances whereas with Michael it’s all about the singing and the song itself.
