Alternative rock term that can cover many different forms of rock from gothic rock to pop rock, most of these have the theme of anti commercialism. Alternative rock is a lot more toned down than traditional rock a punk rock (especially punk) and because of this it appeals a lot more too mainstream audiences.
Themes
Alternative rock deals with a number of themes in it music but it is not uncommon to see themes of social concern in alternative rock music such as depression, drug use and the environment although the mood in which these issues are addressed vary from artist to artist.
Conventions of lyrics
A common part too many alternative rock songs is that the lyrics have deeper message/inner message address a number of issues from personal to worldwide. Another common part to alternative rock lyrics is the questioning of conventional values, this is usually seen and repeated in the lyrics of the song.
Conventions of music videos
Much like lyrics videos of alternative rock also uses inner messages which cause the viewer to have deeper thought into the videos meaning. Alternative rock differ in their codes and conventions from video to video they usually either have one narrative which causes thought or a number of real clips inserted into the song which together give a linked message for example (our effect on the world).
Iconography
The look of alternative rock bands depicted in media is a much more toned down version of punk rock by this I mean that bands are seen wearing unconventional messy clothing but not to the degree in which a viewing is shocked by the bands look. It’s because of this that alternative rock is able to appeal to a mainstream audience and is seen a more socially acceptable by conventional society than punk and traditional rock.
